Fun Facts About Curlew Emerald: Western Australia’s Hidden Green Treasure

At Crystal D’Lites, we love sharing the magic behind rare and meaningful crystals — and Curlew Emerald is one of Australia's best-kept secrets. With its soft green glow, raw natural beauty, and heart-healing energy, this unique variety of emerald is more than just a pretty gem — it’s a spiritual companion. Here are some fun facts about Curlew Emerald, a stone that’s as rare as it is remarkable.

💎 1. It's Mined in Remote Western Australia

Curlew Emerald gets its name from the Curlew Emerald Mine, located in the remote outback of Western Australia. This rugged landscape produces small amounts of emerald — making it a truly local, rare Australian find.  The Curlew Emerald Mine, located in the East Pilbara's Shaw River District of Western Australia, is a small, remote deposit known for producing Australian emeralds. It's not just a crystal — it's a piece of WA's ancient geological story.

💎 2. It’s a Real Emerald from the Beryl Family

Yes — Curlew Emerald is a true emerald, part of the beryl mineral family, just like Colombian and Zambian emeralds. Its green hue comes from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium, the same elements responsible for emerald’s vibrant colour worldwide.  It is generally formed in conjunction with mica. It’s 100% natural — and 100% Australian.

💎 3. Earthy, Calming Colours

While traditional emeralds are often dark and glassy, Curlew Emeralds tend to have a softer, mossy or pale green tone. Many pieces are raw or minimally polished, showcasing inclusions and natural textures that make each piece totally unique.Perfect for those who love organic, earthy, one-of-a-kind crystals.

💎 4. Connected to the Heart Chakra

Curlew Emerald resonates strongly with the heart chakra, making it ideal for:- Emotional healing- Strengthening compassion- Encouraging balance in relationships- Calming anxiety and stressIt’s especially helpful for empaths, healers, or anyone seeking to live more gently and intentionally. A beautiful stone for self-care and emotional renewal.

💎 5. Rare, Ethical & Truly Collectible

Because mining at Curlew is limited and small-scale, Curlew Emerald is rarely found on the commercial market. This makes it a unique collector’s item and a wonderful crystal for anyone who values ethically sourced, natural Australian stones. We are lucky enough to be supplied our Curlew Emeralds (when we have them) from the people that owned the mining lease from 2011 to 2024. If you see it in-store at Crystal D’Lites — grab it! It doesn’t come around often.
